I am in Myanmar (Burma) at the moment and probably forced not to work on the site for the whole lenght of my stay.

A few people know about Myanmar and fewer people know about its problems. I am not the first one to talk about this and won’t be the last, and probably not even the most prolific or interesting teller of this country’s unique segregation from the World. But while I am there living my Myanmar experience and writing about it, I want to present some videoscontributed by a new friend, and a man I strongly admire.

Antonio Graceffo, an Italian American adventure writer and martial arts enthusiast, left a Wall Street finance background to literally dive into Asian adventures and languages. One of his most recent projects is a documentary called “In Shanland” : defying the Burmese government’s ban on journalists, Antonio crossed the border under the protection of the Shan State Army, and began filming interviews with IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) within the war zone.

I am currently interviewing Antonio for Monkeyrockworld, and I thought this series of posts can be a good introduction to Myanmar, its people, and Antonio to my readers. You will definitely enjoy. (more…)

Ieri sera ho finalmente visto Ping Guo e non solo mi e’ piaciuto molto, ma mi ha dato un bello schiaffo in faccia, diretto dal televisore al letto. Mi ha detto: “Svegliati, e’ questo quello che hai intorno”. Stranamente un film cinese che e’ un film, ovvero, che non sembra nemmeno cinese. E che potrebbe aiutarvi a capire un po’ meglio la strana realta’ della megacapitale del Regno di Mezzo alla fine di questi odiosi anni zero, almeno per il sottoscritto. Fa sempre poi un effetto strano vedere un film ambientato a pochi chilometri dalla tua “casa”, una cosa che ti estrania parecchio perche’ la falsezza di una fotografia a 35mm e quindi l’essenza del cinema decade completamente e ti metti a dire, no, questa non e’ la realta’, i colori sono troppo innaturali, manca l’odore di verza e doufu fritti e il cielo di Pechino e’ troppo luminoso in questa scena. Il salone dei massaggi ha colori troppo filmici, manca lo squallore delle pareti scrostate, cosi’ come l’appartamento della coppia e’ certamente molto simile al reale, ma quando quella volta ho visto dove vivevano quei cinesi, l’odore non era mica questo. Insomma, mi ha fatto capire che per tutta la vita non ho capito niente perche’ la fotografia rovina i veri colori del mondo. C’e’ ancora troppa gente che si fa rovinare il cervello da queste cose, troppa, tutta. Questo film mi ha fatto capire che sto facendo la cosa giusta, e che presto sara’ il momento di ripartire, a cercare altri colori e altri odori. Una ricerca senza una fine. Voi intanto cercate di vedere questo film, per capire un po’ meglio, e visivamente, la Grande Babele cinese. E ricordatevi che tutto il mondo ormai e’ filtri, colori, photoshop. Una cosa delirante.

Ne avevo sentito parlare molto un paio di mesi fa, quando questo film taiwanese del noto Ang Lee era uscito anche in Cina, pesantemente tagliato, e ho aspettato con calma di poterne vedere una versione integrale. Non cominciamo ad accusare la Cina di essere un regime censorio anche adesso, grazie, perche’ “Lust, caution” e’ una bella pillola amara da mandare giu’ anche per lo spettatore occidentale. E’ viscido, vizioso, c’e’ molto sesso e non si risparmia una massiccia dose di sadismo puro. Il tutto stemperato da una vena di poetico idealismo, ma presentato duro e puro, come un bel pugno in faccia. (more…)
