Let me tell you, I love India as much as I hate it: chaotic, smelly, pretty dirty, but also divine, sublime, naturalistically beautiful, and so sacred it is impossible to put it into plain words.

I am back in India after one and a half years living la Muslim vida loca in Malaysia, and I am back with a plan: my Journey to the West.  I have been planning and working hard on this for the past six months, and finally, I got myself kickstarted out of Southeast Asia, for a much needed change. Because even tropical paradise, after a while, starts stinking. Exactly like when I frequently forgot to throw out the Malaysian trash, and it transformed into a bowl of steaming vegetable skins and white, twirling maggots. Bleargh.

Journey to the West, we were saying. Yes, this is the plan for 2012, as it may be the last year for mankind, why spending it doing something I do not like? Why chasing money? Or fame? Or education? The Gods may be crazy, but they decided to send me off on the journey of a lifetime… or one of the new ones. I want to go back home for a little while, and I am trying to go without catching a flight. Yes, I had to in order to reach Kolkata, but let’s say this is part one of a bigger project. The Subcontinent, first. The rest, later. Damn visas.

So, here I am in India again. I took it slow, I got it sinking inside for two weeks before writing anything, I absorbed it as a Spongebob under running water, constantly keeping that silly smile. A cow to the left, a cow to the right, three hundred people on the bus when it should fit thirty, elbows in my teeth, buying a train ticket like winning the New Year’s lottery, and you have a chance over one million. I love it. It was much needed and a refreshing getaway from the pension-fund-owner-friendly chillness of Southeast Asia.

Kolkata was like doing acid in London and see the lamp posts lysergically transforming into twirling tentacles and reach for the yellow cabs, everywhere. I loved Akilesh and the boys from Kalimpong, thank you people for making my transition a lovely one. These Northeastern people are amazing; I will see you soon up there. Then, the coast of Orissa was a welcome change from the coldish climate of wintered West Bengal. Staying in a desert, scorched land just a few miles from the beach with a community of international surfers was another nice addition to the shopping list of experiences that this country can profuse left and right… om shanti om India.

Last but not least, the quiet home of my good friends Matteo and Carola in Bollophur was a welcoming haven of peace to recharge my batteries before jumping on the train again… tomorrow.

These are, in a whirlwind of a nutshell, the Indian experiences thus far: I did not do too much, for two weeks, or maybe I already did too many things and I do not realize as of yet. But my mood is high, and I am really looking forward breaking the keyboard and write as much as possible this year because the Monkey Dragon will be, like a bad Bruce Lee rip off made in Cinecitta’ by Lucio Fulci and Joe d’Amato in a tag wrestling team. More news on the Journey to the West will be disclosed as they become reality: at the present stage, consider it will entice rock and roll, charity, madness, mayhem and travel to the less fashionable corners of the known routes.

Tom is also the author of Sacred Skin, a very interesting photo book on sak yant, Thailand’s sacred tattoos, and the first on the subject in English. Expect to see a review cum interview up here soon if I won’t be able to place the article elsewhere… meanwhile, I have started my trip and I am in India. All is in a state of blur at the moment as many things are boiling and will be coming up extremely soon… some very good things for this poor little Monkey!!

Please take one hour of your time to check out this documentary put together by a crew of  very “special travelers”. I found it thanks to a friend and had a very good time watching it. These guys have made their passion a full time job which is taking them around the world.  I thought this may be inspirational for many of you following me out there, plus it is indeed a great teaser of some of the areas of Northwest India I will be visiting in around two months time.

Popolo italiano, in parte perchè Berlusconi è mezzo sparito, e mi state piú simpatici, e in parte perchè ora che scrivo troppo in Inglese mi manca un pò la bellezza del “dolce Stilnovo”, decido di riaprire le comunicazioni e i consigli in Italiano per tutti quelli a cui piace usare i propri soldini per sbattersi su degli aerei  e raggiungere destinazioni in giro per il mondo. Ho deciso di inaugurare dunque una rinomata serie di posts in Italiano, una Scimmioguida di Viaggio per aiutare chi, come me, ha questo insano desiderio di viversi un’anfetamina di mondo.

Io, di mio, ho il culo piantato in Asia da ormai quattro anni che in intensità mi sono sembrati un decennio, ma nessuno vi vieta di cercarvi delle altre offerte voli  e di andare dove vi pare. Io stesso sono seduto attualmente nella stazione Sentral di Kuala Lumpur, sono le sei e trenta del mattino e dopo aver passato la notte in treno scendendo dalla mia bella isoletta casa Penang, non ho altro di meglio da fare che scrivervi una letterina aspettando il mio volo delle tre del pomeriggio per le fantozziane “Fogne di Calcutta”… già, si ritorna in India, questa volta per circa quattro mesi, e in una maniera super hippy: con una bella chitarrina portatile custom made in Australia, pronto a portare il mio scalcinato blues ai quattro angoli del subcontinente, Nepal e Bangladesh compresi,

“Ma come fa questo?” si chiederanno quanti di voi ancora mi conoscono poco.

Semplice: questo prende la vita per le corna e gliele spacca, ecco come. Recentemente mi sono sentito dire da una voce cara che “l’anno prossimo hai 32 anni, metti la testa a posto”, ma io, piú a posto di così , non saprei dove metterla la mia testa. Ho passato gli ultimi due anni a studiare, pagato (poco) in una università malesiana, a 35 gradi all’ombra tutto l’anno, incluse le poche rinfrescanti piogge tropicali. In questi due anni, ho avuto la possibilità di andare al fondo di una zona del mondo, il Sudest asiatico, che amo e che molti amano dopo brevi vacanze al sole, ma che a me, dopo una attenta osservazione e un paio di domande, pare invece che conosciate proprio poco. Un pò come fare le immersioni, e andare a vedere i coralli, mentre gli inglesi stanno in spiaggia a bere e a fumarsi le cannette, e si perdono lo spettacolo migliore. Ho sofferto si, ma ho ottenuto un titolo di livello internazionale che mi permetterà ora di continuare una sorta di supervacanza da scrittore, io la chiamo così, lavorando con una università australiana. Immagino che saro’ molto popolare tra gli studenti, in futuro.

Insomma, a tutti quelli che mi davano per uno spacciato con la chitarra in mano una quindicina di anni fa bhe, dopo aver costruito una vita attorno a quella chitarra scalcinata che molti di voi vi sognate guardando il grigio di Milano dalle finestre dei vostri uffici, vi dico: è possibile. Ci vogliono un pò di cojones, ma è una cosa fattibile.  Da oggi, vi prometto di svelare pian piano alcuni dei miei segreti, perche’ mi fa dispiacere vedere tanti tedeschi, francesi, spagnoli, e pochissimi italiani avventurosi. Non la magia, quella no, quella la riservo per me. Ma cercherò di dare alcuni consigli per rendere le vostre vite che sognano viaggi un pò meno sogni, e un pò piú lunghi, interessanti viaggi. E’ uscito il mio primo articolo per il quotidiano indipendente online LETTERA 43 dedicato alla situazione non troppo golosa per gli omosessuali in Malaysia… il ban al gay pride Seksualiti Merdeka… le nuovi leggi civili anti-gay… insomma, tante belle cose per amare il paese adottivo dei miei ultimi 2 anni!!! Omofobia alla Malese

Altre novita’ riguardo la Malaysia: punto primo, mi sono finalmente laureato (per la seconda volta), e ora sono “Maestro nello studio di come i Cinesi studiano l’Inglese”. E’ stata una lunga avventura che merita un libro intero, chissa’ se mai sara’ scritto… in ogni modo, l’aver studiato in una Universita’ asiatica e’ una esperienza MOLTO PARTICOLARE che non so se mi sento di consigliare ad amici o nemici.

Alla fine dei conti, in ogni caso, e’ stata una esperienza rivelatoria e ancora piu’ intima con le menti (spesso malate) che popolano questi paradisi tropicali, che eleva il Monkey di un’altra spanna verso lo status di IRON BUDDHA.

Punto secondo, a Gennaio lascio il paese a tempo indeterminato. Novita’ sul grande progetto scimmiesco le troverete presto su questo blog… mutante… per il momento, leggetevi l’articolo sui gay e sperate di non esserlo in Malaysia!!
