Wicked World releases issue 2

September 06, 2013 By: Marco Ferrarese Category: Asia, English, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Wicked World Visited: No Comments →

WickedWorld2_Cover-455I am proud to announce the release of the second issue of Wicked World, a digital magazine project I am involved with and that I did not have the time – really folks, believe me, life’s super hectic these days – to properly publicize on Monkeyrockworld. This is another world, in fact: Wicked World, and oh boy, if it that dares to be different. Unrestricted by commercial considerations, it remains free to challenge, question, and tell the truth about the business of international travel. We’re not here to sell expensive guided tours, round-the-world gap year tickets, or travel insurance, but exist primarily to provide a platform for the kind of honest, alternative and irreverent travel writing that wouldn’t normally find a home in more mainstream publications.

In Issue Two you will find articles on: the walled Muslim city of Harar in Eastern Ethiopia; the Sultan of Sulu and the disastrous recent invasion of Sabah in Borneo; frenzied voodoo ceremonies in Benin; the sculpture of Iran’s Ahad Hosseini; the strange religious cult of Caodai in Vietnam; Thailand’s spirit tattoos; the sacred city of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka; rapidly changing Cuba; and the punk rock scene in Penang, Malaysia.

You can read the present issue in digital format clicking here.

If you feel like you have something worthwhile and relevant to contribute to the Wicked World project, or would simply like to know more, then feel free to contact either me at marco@wickedworld.net or tom@wickedworld.net.

It’s impossible for me to write my blogs regularly these days. I am sure things will change, but you have to bear with my current situation. Too many things to do, and write, especially. Be patient, one day I will find the recipe for a balanced life of writing, earning the buck, and great world travel. Meanwhile, I just do the best I can not to let the best independent (and motherfuckin’) opinion on life in Asia to vanish in the internet limbo of  neglected sites.   By the way, let’s go back to Sri Lanka, that lovely tear-shaped island crying out from the bottom of India. My only regret was having visited in the midst of the Holiday Season, when prices and tourists soar higher, and higher, and higher. But besides having to shell out a minimum of 10 dollars a night for a double room with beds  mostly stinking like death put his head on the pillow and exhaled her last breath just there, it was a good trip. The island is small and compact, getting anywhere takes time, but the buses are very cheap, overcrowded and fun. I criss-crossed the place: if I had had an extra week, I would have made it up to Jaffna. It will be for the next time. (more…)

Sri Lanka, Bentota: a morning stroll at the Fish Market

January 26, 2011 By: Marco Ferrarese Category: Asia, English, Sri Lanka, Travels, video Visited: 3 Comments →

A few days before leaving Sri Lanka, we stayed in Aluthgama with our friend Saman. Besides working on a lot of video materials to support  Helianto organization (they will come soon, I’m just too busy to take care of it at the moment) we had a chance to explore the daily life of Sri Lanka in deeper detail. The fish market experience in Bentota was particularly mind opening. We saw the content of the fishing boats plying the routes along the Eastern coast of India emptied in front of our very own eyes.
