I have been told that Korean superstar PSY, the man of the Gangnam Style, is apparently scheduled to perform at the Barisan National Chinese New Year’s Open House on the next 11th of February. This is great news as the location is literally 10 minutes walking from my doorstep.
I honestly think that PSY has accomplished a very important thing for an Asian artist: he could be funny, and self-critical about the status of his own country’s popular tastes. For this reason alone, I liked him a lot. Even if I think that if I close my eyes and only listen to his video – I mean, if I judge the music alone – it is as tasteless as Europe and Roxette played by a drunk DJ at a house party in the 2000s.
However, for those having lived in Malaysia for a while and tried to understand its complex societal and political situation, the Penang coming of PSY is indeed quite an event: in fact, it is interesting to note how Barisan National, the ruling coalition of parties having governed Malaysia for the past – errr…- 54 years, had decided to invite the Korean pop idol at the dawn of the new political elections…. oh my!! The event’s location is particularly interesting, as well: Penang is in fact run by the opposition. Ah-ah! Bingo!
Cormac McCarthy wrote No Country for Old Men: in this case, Barisan National should understand that Malaysia is also No Country for Stupids, and possibly think of spending PSY‘s millionaire cachet on something better. Food for thought. I will try to investigate if the event will in fact take place – online sources are quite misleading -, and if so, I will definitely attend. Meanwhile, I leave you with a funny Malaysian parody of “Gangnam Style”. I am sorry but if you have not a bit of familiarity with the country’s political situation, it will be difficult to laugh as much as I did. However, the dancing hornbill is still quite a show, so please, enjoy!!!
